Pohatu Reserve Wildlife Encounter
Upon arrival at the Pohatu Reserve, a working sheep farm, you'll discover the fascinating world of white-flippered penguins. As the largest little penguin colony on mainland New Zealand, Pohatu provides a rare chance to see these adorable creatures up-close, especially during nesting season when penguin chicks are present.
Along the way, your guide will share insights into the area’s history, ecology, and geology. While the tour is not specifically focused on birdwatching, you'll encounter a variety of native birds, insects like the Tree Weta, and perhaps some quick-moving lizards. The Pohatu Reserve is teeming with wildlife, making each visit a unique experience.
Return to Akaroa
After the wildlife adventure, head back to Akaroa, where you’ll have some free time to explore this charming town.
Important Notes
- Bring water, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes.
