FULL ITINERARY
Meet Your Guide at the Port
After your ship arrives, your English-speaking guide will be waiting at the designated meeting point near the cruise terminal, holding a welcome board with your name or group name.
Following a brief introduction, board your private chartered car or coach and begin the journey into Sendai. During the drive, your guide will introduce the city’s history and share insights into Date Masamune, the influential feudal lord who founded modern Sendai, while highlighting the thoughtful service provided by Shore Excursions Asia.
Sendai Castle Ruins and Aoba Castle Material Exhibition Hall
Your first destination is the historic site of Sendai Castle, also known as Aoba Castle.
The castle was originally constructed in the early 17th century under Date Masamune, the first lord of the Sendai Domain. Although the original castle buildings no longer remain, the elevated grounds have been transformed into a spacious historical park overlooking the city.
Walk through the former castle grounds while your guide explains the history of the Date clan and the strategic importance of the castle’s hillside location. From the observation area, enjoy panoramic views over central Sendai and the surrounding landscape.
One of the most recognizable landmarks here is the equestrian statue of Date Masamune, depicted wearing his distinctive crescent-shaped helmet. There will be time to take photographs and appreciate the scenery.
Continue to the Aoba Castle Material Exhibition Hall, where historical materials, models and visual displays offer a clearer picture of how the castle once appeared. The exhibition also introduces the life of Date Masamune and the development of Sendai during the feudal period.
Transfer to Zuihoden Mausoleum
Rejoin your vehicle and travel to Zuihoden, the mausoleum complex of Date Masamune.
During the drive, your guide may share additional stories about Sendai’s samurai heritage and the lasting influence of the Date family on the city’s architecture, traditions and culture.
Zuihoden Mausoleum
Located on a forested hillside, Zuihoden is the final resting place of Date Masamune. The approach to the mausoleum passes through a peaceful grove of tall cedar trees, creating a quiet and atmospheric setting away from the city.
The route includes stone steps and a gradually rising pathway near the entrance. Guests may proceed at a comfortable pace, with time allowed for short pauses along the way.
Admire the elaborate architectural details of the mausoleum, which features vivid colors, decorative carvings and traditional motifs associated with the luxurious style of the early Edo period. Your guide will explain the symbolism of the design and the role of the mausoleum within the history of the Date clan.
The surrounding complex also contains memorial sites connected to later generations of the Sendai feudal family. Enjoy time to walk through the tranquil grounds, take photographs and experience the calm atmosphere of the cedar forest.
Return to the Cruise Port
After completing your visit to Zuihoden, meet your driver and begin the return journey to the cruise port.
Your guide will assist you throughout the transfer and ensure that the return schedule is carefully coordinated with the ship’s departure time.
Arrive back at the port with sufficient time to proceed through the terminal and reboard your ship.
Important Notes
