FULL ITINERARY
Meet Your Guide at Aomori Port
Upon arrival at Aomori Port, your English-speaking guide welcomes you with a personalized sign. This marks the beginning of one of the signature Aomori shore excursions designed by Shore Excursions Asia. After a brief introduction, board your private car or coach for a scenic transfer toward Hirosaki, a city known for its samurai traditions, preserved historical sites, and rich cultural atmosphere.
Choshoji Temple in Zenrin gai
Your first destination is Choshoji Temple, the head temple of the Tsugaru clan established in the early seventeenth century. Set within the quiet Zenrin gai district and shaded by ancient cedar trees, the temple features traditional gates, peaceful walkways, and the graves of Hirosaki’s early feudal lords.
As you stroll through the grounds, your guide will share stories of the Tsugaru family, their role in shaping regional history, and the spiritual practices that have endured in northern Japan. The serene atmosphere creates an ideal introduction to Hirosaki’s cultural depth.
Hirosaki Park
Continue to Hirosaki Park, one of Japan’s most treasured historical parks. Known for its scenic moats and bridges as well as thousands of cherry trees that attract visitors in spring, the park is beautiful in every season, from the rich greens of summer to the deep reds of autumn and the quiet snowscapes of winter.
Hirosaki Castle
At the heart of the park stands Hirosaki Castle, built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan. The three story castle tower, framed by moats and stone walls, is one of the few surviving Edo period keeps in Japan.
Although restoration of the stone walls is ongoing and may limit access to some areas, visitors can still enjoy impressive viewpoints, learn about the castle’s history, and capture memorable photos of this celebrated landmark.
Sannai Maruyama Archaeological Site
After exploring Hirosaki, return to Aomori City to visit the Sannai Maruyama Archaeological Site, one of Japan’s largest prehistoric settlements. More than five thousand years old, this expansive Jomon period site features reconstructed pit dwellings, longhouses, and artifacts that offer a vivid look into ancient Japanese life.
Wander through the open air grounds as your guide explains why the site became a UNESCO World Heritage location and how it has transformed understanding of Japan’s prehistoric cultures.
Nebuta WA RASSE Museum
Your final visit is the Nebuta WA RASSE Museum, home to the energetic spirit of Aomori’s world famous Nebuta Festival. Inside, you will see the spectacular illuminated festival floats, each one intricately crafted with dramatic expressions of warriors, deities, and mythical creatures.
The museum’s sights, sounds, and interactive exhibits immerse you in the creativity and passion behind this centuries old celebration, providing a vibrant conclusion to your cultural journey.
Return to Aomori Port
Relax on the drive back to the port as your guide ensures a timely return for your ship’s departure. This enriching day of history, artistry, and regional heritage will remain one of the most memorable parts of your northern Japan voyage.
Note: The order of visits may change depending on traffic and opening hours to provide the most comfortable experience.
